SUMMARY:Design and Film
DESCRIPTION:Lecture presented by Ronald Gow On a low budget film\, the ar
t department seems to be the most curtailed. With their visible equipmen
t camera\, stock\, artistes and post-production grab the bulk of the fun
ds. This is a great mistake\, for both the art department and the desig
n process can not only save money but more importantly can give the writ
ten word of the script its visual form\, pushing it into a three-dimensi
onal world. In this talk a number of approaches in elevating the script
into a visual form will be explored and introduced as practical ways of
going about designing for film and demonstrating 'what the art departme
nt can do for your script'. Ronald Gow\, art director of shorts and fea
tures\, presents a lecture that will change the way you budget forever.

SUMMARY:A Crude Awakening
DESCRIPTION:Presented in association with the Eden Project Filmmakers Bas
il Gelpke and Ray McCormack team up to deliver a grave warning in this d
ocumentary on the oil industry. Gelpke and McCormack are firm believers
that the world's oil resources are in dangerously short supply\, and tha
t the price of oil is about to rise to previously unthinkable levels. Th
e film also offers some possible solutions to the oil crisis by looking
at alternative energy sources. A shocking wake-up call that is set to do
for energy what Al Gore's 'An Inconvenient Truth' did for the environme
nt\, 'A Crude Awakening' is a compelling\, intelligent and urgent warnin
g that the age of abundant oil is over. Featuring testimonies from the w
orld's top experts\, this startling documentary reaches an ominous yet l
ogical conclusion that the Earth's oil supplies are peaking and a crisis
of global proportions looms. Even more alarmingly\, industrial societie
s don't have any plans how to deal with the shortage\, threatening the f
uture of our post-industrialised fossil fuel-addicted civilization with
disaster. There will be a Q & A after the screening with Olie Harbottle\
, Dogwoof Distribution This film has been given a guidance rating of PG

SUMMARY:Charlotte: A Royal At War

SUMMARY:Blindness
DESCRIPTION:Introduction by\, Executive Producer\, Simon Channing-William
s\n Blindness\, directed by Fernando Meirelles (City of God)\, features
an international cast\, including Julianne Moore\, Mark Ruffalo and Dann
y Glover of the U.S.\; Gael Garcia Bernal of Mexico\; Sandra Oh of Canad
a\; and Yusuke Iseya of Japan. The story was adapted for the screen from
Nobel Laureate José Saramago's novel of the same name. This bold new fi
lm is an epic exploration of human nature in the face of disaster. A man
develops a mysterious and highly contagious illness which causes him to
become blinded by a milky haze. Infecting all who come into contact wit
h him\, it rapidly becomes an epidemic\, disabling the city by panic. Th
e first infected victims are quarantined in an abandoned asylum and as t
hey are preyed upon by other inmates and abused by the guards\, life ins
ide soon descends into uncivilized madness. Meirelles's film is truly b
eautiful\, even though the scenes are extreme. Whitewashed images provid
e a visual representation of the victims' experience and part of the tre
mendous success of Blindness is in its creation of a unique visual appro
ach to telling this story. The powerful treatment of a population savage
d by inhumanity forces us to question the workings of our own institutio
ns\, the boundaries of civilization and\, ultimately\, just how much we
really let ourselves see. This film has been given a guidance rating of

SUMMARY:Sunrise
DESCRIPTION:A young woman from the city (Margaret Livingstone) finds refu
ge in an isolated rural community\, where she immediately starts to have
an affair with a married farmer (George O’Brien). As her holiday comes
to an end\, the temptress suggests that the farmer should sell his land
and return with her to the city. But there is a problem: what should th
e farmer do about his wife? "Couldn't she just... drown...?" Sunrise is
a timeless classic of corruption\, redemption and true love. Widely rega
rded as one of the most exquisitely realised of all silent films\, it is
arguably one of the greatest films of the Twentieth Century. Made with
an unlimited budget it uses an amazing array of cinematic touches\, with
a plot that will keep you transfixed to the screen. The screening will
be accompanied with a modern live-music sound track performed and arran
ged by Wurlitza\, a five piece Cornish band of eclectic musical talents
from classical piano and guitar to vocal harmony\, pop and ska. This wil
l be a truly unique and memorable event\, suitable for all ages and free
for older people. Of particular Cornish interest will be a mazurka by t
he Cornish composer Herbert Lanyon (father of Peter Lanyon)\, which has
been especially transcribed for clarinet and guitars for this film. This
Film has been given a guidance rating of U.
