Blindness

Introduction by, Executive Producer, Simon Channing-Williams Blindness, directed by Fernando Meirelles (City of God), features an international cast, including Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo and Danny Glover of the U.S.; Gael Garcia Bernal of Mexico; Sandra Oh of Canada; and Yusuke Iseya of Japan. The story was adapted for the screen from Nobel Laureate José Saramago's novel of the same name. This bold new film is an epic exploration of human nature in the face of disaster. A man develops a mysterious and highly contagious illness which causes him to become blinded by a milky haze. Infecting all who come into contact with him, it rapidly becomes an epidemic, disabling the city by panic. The first infected victims are quarantined in an abandoned asylum and as they are preyed upon by other inmates and abused by the guards, life inside soon descends into uncivilized madness. Meirelles's film is truly beautiful, even though the scenes are extreme. Whitewashed images provide a visual representation of the victims' experience and part of the tremendous success of Blindness is in its creation of a unique visual approach to telling this story. The powerful treatment of a population savaged by inhumanity forces us to question the workings of our own institutions, the boundaries of civilization and, ultimately, just how much we really let ourselves see. Charlotte: A Royal At War

The film will be introduced by writer and director Ray Tostevin. Ray, who is the founding director of Yeovil-based GRACE Productions, will also be available for Q & A following the film. We are thrilled to host the South West premiere screening of Charlotte: A Royal at War (also known as Léif Lëtzebuerger), the remarkable account of one woman and her government’s pursuit of freedom for their country - against the brutal occupation by Hitler’s Third Reich. This film is the previously untold story of a wife and mother of six children, Charlotte of Luxembourg, the Royal “propagandist in pearls” who inspired a nation through the power of radio, to reach her people in their darkest hour. The film reveals a powerful truth: ordinary people will endure hardship, imprisonment, even death, if they have someone to believe in, to keep their hopes alive. The feature length documentary combines vivid eyewitness testimony with dramatic reconstruction and unique, previously unseen, colour archive. This film has been given a guidance rating of PG

Cornwall Film Festival is a vibrant Festival focusing on Cornish filmmaking, offering local and national premieres, master classes, workshops, discussions and parties for everyone from the enthusiast to the professional. The Festival runs from 12th - 15th November 2009 across two venues offering the opportunity to see Cornish Filmmaking at it's best.

The Festival requires a Director and a Festival Coordinator to organise the 2009 Cornwall Film Festival and beyond.

Festival Director - £8,000 for a 5-month freelance contract for services starting August 1st 2009

Festival Co-ordinator - £4,000 for a 12-month (part-time) contract employment starting August 1st 2009

Film Festival Finds Shelter Under Phoenix's Wings

An exciting new venue will give Cornish filmmakers a fantastic opportunity to see their films on the ‘big screen’, in front of a packed cinema audience, as part of the Cornwall Film Festival 2009, which takes place 12th - 15th November. 

The Cornwall Film Festival is a vibrant celebration of Cornish and International filmmaking, offering local and national premieres that are open to everyone, from the enthusiast to the professional. A variety of seminar programmes, professional development workshops, master classes and parties provide the opportunity to network with local filmmakers as well as with the UK’s leading industry professionals.

The Festival is an annual event and has grown year on year to include an expanding range of exciting screenings and events. In previous years the main Festival events have been spread across several venues in Falmouth, including the Princess Pavilions and The National Maritime Museum. With the audience numbers increasing by more than five times since its inception in 2002 and the number of film submissions rising yearly it has been necessary to find a new venue able to accommodate the growing festival.

Falmouth’s new cinema, The Phoenix, is a state of the art five-screen cinema, including two traditional-style auditoriums where the Cornwall Film Festival 2009 will hold the main festival screenings.  Three "luxurious" screens with leather armchairs and sofas will host an assortment of networking events, discussions and lectures, professional development workshops and special screenings.

The move to a new venue with specialised facilities will centralise the Cornwall Film Festival and enable it to build on the success of previous years.  It is an exciting prospect for the festival to be held in a real cinema and is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the wealth of talent in the local film industry on the big screen. The festival expects to attract even larger audiences this year for what is set to be the best Cornwall Film Festival yet.

Cornwall Film Festival 2009 Calls for Entries
Cornish filmmakers have an exciting opportunity to have their films showcased on the big screen at Falmouth’s new cinema, The Phoenix, as part of Cornwall Film Festival 2009, which takes place 12th - 15th November.

The Cornwall Film Festival is an annual celebration of Cornish and international filmmaking, offering local and national premieres.  A programme of professional development workshops, lectures and parties also provides the opportunity to network with the UK’s leading industry professionals.

The venue for the Cornwall Film Festival 2009, The Phoenix, is a state of the art 5 screen cinema operated by the Merlin Cinemas chain and includes luxury licensed screens and a Cafe/Bar.

The Cornwall Film Festival is currently calling for film submissions. To enter your film for free, submit via the Festival website www.cornwallfilmfestival.com by the Early bird Deadline: 14 July. The Final Deadline for entries is 11 August.

This year the Festival introduces two new Jury Awards for Cornish short films that will replace the audience awards for Best Film of the Festival and Best Student Film of the Festival. The jury will include leading UK media industry professionals.

The Another Country International Short Film Award returns for its second year to celebrate films of all genres made in towns, villages and rural communities across the world. There is a cash prize of £1000 for the winning film from award sponsors University College Falmouth.

Board Shorts awards and prizes will also be presented to the best international surf/skate/snowboarding short films. Board Shorts 2009 will be held at Carnmarth Hotel in Newquay on Saturday 7 November.
