Featured/Feature Film
A young woman from the city (Margaret Livingstone) finds refuge in an isolated rural community, where she immediately starts to have an affair with a married farmer (George O’Brien). As her holiday comes to an end, the temptress suggests that the farmer should sell his land and return with her to the city. But there is a problem: what should the farmer do about his wife? "Couldn't she just... drown...?" Sunrise is a timeless classic of corruption, redemption and true love. Widely regarded as one of the most exquisitely realised of all silent films, it is arguably one of the greatest films of the Twentieth Century. Made with an unlimited budget it uses an amazing array of cinematic touches, with a plot that will keep you transfixed to the screen. The screening will be accompanied with a modern live-music sound track performed and arranged by Wurlitza, a five piece Cornish band of eclectic musical talents from classical piano and guitar to vocal harmony, pop and ska. This will be a truly unique and memorable event, suitable for all ages and free for older people. Of particular Cornish interest will be a mazurka by the Cornish composer Herbert Lanyon (father of Peter Lanyon), which has been especially transcribed for clarinet and guitars for this film. This Film has been given a guidance rating of U.
Featured/Feature Film
We are pleased to announce that Kayleigh Soltys, Miss Cornwall 2008, will be introducing Tink’s Kitchen and the feature will be followed by a discussion with Henry Davies (writer.director/producer), Ben Hartley DOP, Laura Frances Martin (lead actress) & Stuart Finn (lead actor). This is a fly-on-the-wall style mockumentary which begins with Christian “Tink” Mayberry leaving his highly ordered, disciplined career as a Naval Officer to pursue what he says is his lifelong dream to own and run a gastropub in Cornwall. Due to the belief that his military training will give him the necessary skills to successfully run the business, his unique methods and attitude begins to alienate his staff, customers and ultimately his family. With a cast of exciting new talent Tink’s Kitchen has all the comedy, drama and heart of real life. This film contains strong language.

Film Festival Finds Shelter Under Phoenix's Wings

An exciting new venue will give Cornish filmmakers a fantastic opportunity to see their films on the ‘big screen’, in front of a packed cinema audience, as part of the Cornwall Film Festival 2009, which takes place 12th - 15th November.

The Cornwall Film Festival is a vibrant celebration of Cornish and International filmmaking, offering local and national premieres that are open to everyone, from the enthusiast to the professional. A variety of seminar programmes, professional development workshops, master classes and parties provide the opportunity to network with local filmmakers as well as with the UK’s leading industry professionals.

The Festival is an annual event and has grown year on year to include an expanding range of exciting screenings and events. In previous years the main Festival events have been spread across several venues in Falmouth, including the Princess Pavilions and The National Maritime Museum. With the audience numbers increasing by more than five times since its inception in 2002 and the number of film submissions rising yearly it has been necessary to find a new venue able to accommodate the growing festival.

Falmouth’s new cinema, The Phoenix, is a state of the art five-screen cinema, including two traditional-style auditoriums where the Cornwall Film Festival 2009 will hold the main festival screenings.  Three "luxurious" screens with leather armchairs and sofas will host an assortment of networking events, discussions and lectures, professional development workshops and special screenings.

The move to a new venue with specialised facilities will centralise the Cornwall Film Festival and enable it to build on the success of previous years.  It is an exciting prospect for the festival to be held in a real cinema and is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the wealth of talent in the local film industry on the big screen. The festival expects to attract even larger audiences this year for what is set to be the best Cornwall Film Festival yet.

The Cornwall Film Festival 2009 takes place 12th – 15th November at The Phoenix Cinema, Falmouth.  We are currently calling for film submissions. To enter your film check out the submissions page on the Festival website: www.cornwallfilmfestival.com.
